This morning I was washing the dishes that have accumulated the last day or two. Nothing much..just a few bowls, some silverware, one small sauce pan and a couple plates. For the first time in in many years, I don't have a dishwasher in this mobile home so I've washed dishes by hand the last 5-1/2 years.... I don't mind all that much, except that when they pile up, there's no place to hide them. LOL Anyway, as a kid...it was my job to wash dishes at least once a day, the other times I dried and my mom washed them. The times when I washed and was supposed to dry & put them away, I thought it was just easier to let them air dry. We had the standard dish drying rack and I developed a method to put all the dishes, silver, pots and pans for a family of four in and on the dish rack. Stacked so well, I don't think an earthquake could have toppled them. My dad finally dubbed me the "Queen of stacking dishes." I held that title for years...until I married and we bought our first automatic dishwasher. It was a portable one that we rolled over to the sink to load and wash the dishes.
This morning as I washed those dishes and delicately stacked them in the small dish drainer that sits in my second sink, I thought my dad would be so proud of me. Once again, they are air drying....I'll go back and put them away in a couple hours. I haven't lost the art of stacking dishes.
Dad......I love you and miss you........Linda
Oh Linda what a nice memory. Funny how stuff like that comes back to you once in while. Have a nice day. Joni

Hello Linda,
ReplyDeleteNow am I wierd or what?! I ALWAYS wear an apron! I don't have, and never wanted, a dishwasher. When my new kitchen was being built Peter asked me if I'd like a dishwasher but I said I'd rather have an extra cupboard! As for aprons, I put mine on as soon as I get up in the morning and am often found wearing it when having dinner, I have loads of them and wear a clean one every day! I collect aprons like recipe books, lol!! Pat http://journals.aol.co.uk/pm71blackfen/ramblings-from-pat/
Apparently it is more hygeinic to let your dishes air dry ,thats my story anyway ! great pictures ,have lovely week end ..love Jan xx
ReplyDeleteI was always the dish dryer growing up... but our neighbor who was probably only in her thirties (I was only ten or so) and so excentric, she bbqed a whole pig in her backyard once, use to put the dishes away wet claiming they would dry in the cupboard, lol....
ReplyDeleteEnjoy your weekend!
Linda :)
That's cute... we did the same thing here too. Washing was bad enough much less drying and putting up. I was laughing because the other day I wrote in my journal I did dishes with my hands for the first time in a long time. LoL. We get spoiled with dishwashers.
ReplyDeleteTake care, Chrissie
Lovely memory of a moment with your dad. I have not had a dishwasher for years. We did have one when I was a girl, but my mother only liked using it at Christmas and Easter. The rest of the year my sister and I did the dishes in turn. One week I would wash and the next I would dry. I never minded. Actually I lie when I say I don't have a dishwasher, I do!!! Todd!!!! He says that I do the cooking so it's the least he can do to wash up! I don't mind a bit!

Hi Linda..I want to apologize to you! I have missed a ton of your entries. I have you on alerts and thought you were not posting because I haven't been getting them :( so today when I got your comment I thought...Well, I'm going to just jump over there and make sure she's not updating...and wow did I miss alot. I have to spend a while tonight catching up with you! lol I'm going to add you again to see if that helps. It was working before because I seen your alerts for a while. I just thought you were not updating. You asked if it was a special day...well every year the catholic church puts on a HUGE picnic/firework show (always at the end of july) and it IS the best around...they are awesome! And that's why we really wanted to see them :( And missed the most of them. THey lasted 25 min of pure fireworks...non stop.
ReplyDeleteHI LInda...can you try emailing me again I don't think my email box was ever activated but I did go and do it (I think) but will find out. THanks so much
