When I was in high school I especially loved the country-western music of that time. I remember seeing in person Johnny Cash, Lefty Frizzell and other western singers. Lefty recorded some great songs and among them was 'The Long Black Veil.' I heard it the other day for the first time in probably 25 years (thanks Jimmy) and could not believe that I still remembered the words like I'd just heard it yesterday. (Why can't I remember what I learned in History class~maybe they should have put it to music.) Anyway, some of you younger readers may think this is a bit weird but this was a good old country western song from the 1950's.

My dad listened to all that great old country music, and I have great memories of this song, but my fave of Lefty Frizzell will always be Saginaw, Michigan. Some of my faves of the time are Marty Robbins & Johnny Horton. My dad's song to me was Jimmy Dean's 'To A Sleeping Beauty'... I got the album when he my dad died.

That is a song I like to sing myself, when I get my guitar out. I also have it by Johnny Cash.

ReplyDeleteI saw a young Johnny Cash singing that song about the crick rising in a show he did at a University. He was absolutely riveting, his looks, the dramatic way he sang it. I thought no wonder we loved all these older singers so much. I had a listen to this song and remember it well. I heard a lot of western songs being married to a singer who had a beautiful voice He lost his mother when he was 4 so when he sang, "I will have the last waltz with Mother," everyone would tear up including him!
