What were some activities from your childhood that make you smile? For example: miniature golf, climbing trees, lying on your back looking up at the clouds, staying out till the street lights came on, looking for four leaf clovers. Wow, this is a hard one for me~so many wonderful, carefree times. I know one thing was riding my bike back and forth to my friends houses. After the 4th grade I lived in a rural area, so there was no one "just next door." Barbara was at least a half a mile away and Joni about a mile and a half. So there was lots of peddling going on. (Gosh no wonder my knees hurt now.) And Krissy mentioned laying on your back and looking at clouds~Barbara and I used to climb up on our chicken coop with blankets and pillows, it had a lean-to type roof and we'd lay up there looking at clouds and hiding from my little brother. We also would gather as many kids as we could in the summer, and play baseball in the pasture. Or was it more like a "dodge the cow-pies" and baseball mixture? I had lots of chores as a kid but my folks also let me play and just be a kid, too.
When I got older, we would take the bus (it came like every 3 hours) and go to town. That was before malls, when there were stores downtown like Woolworth's, Kresse's, Leeds Shoes, Penney's, Sears, Lerner's, etc. It was a big deal to go off on the bus and spend a few hours window shopping. Of course since the bus ran each way only a few times each day, we had to watch the time...as a missed bus would have been a disaster.
I'm happy I grew up in the innocence of the 1950's. Life was good...no gangs, drugs and hey...no cell phones for our mom's to call and check up on us. LOL
P.S. I just remembered~as a teenager the highlight of my life was getting dropped off at the roller skating rink by either my dad or someone else's dad for and afternoon or evening of roller skating (not roller blading...those weren't invented yet). There was even a real organ with someone playing the music for us to skate to. It was great~the place to see and be seen on a Saturday late afternoon and evening.

I just now got you set to my alerts... Those are wonderful memories. My favorite ones consisted of roller blading and play dates with my cousins. -Missy http://journals.aol.com/ma24179/MISSYZSTUFF
Aww what great memories! Wasn't' it just great to be a kid!? Now a days kids just want to grow up way to fast!
Yes, wasn't it nice to grow up during a time when you didn't sit in the house all day watching TV and playing computer games? I grew up later than you, but it was still pretty innocent then. Sounds like you had a fun childhood. We didn't play baseball, we played wiffleball. I guess we were more whimpy, LOL. And yes, gathering with friends to hang out and window shop, actually to do just about anything, was so much fun! Thanks for the memories, Linda!

Your childhood memories are wonderful ones - I can just imagine everything you said. You were lucky to have grown up when you did ~ my mom tells me all the time about her youthful years and they did seem so much more innocent than now. She rode her bike everywhere too. Very nice entry, I enjoyed strolling down memory lane with you.

wonderful childhood memories! I bet it was fun to go to town and look at the stores; I remember a lot of the store names you listed; gone a lot of them these days.

Yeah those were the good old days. Lots of carefree fun. Joni
One of my favourite things from being a kid that I remember most is playing games with all the neighbourhood kids on the village green. We'd play red rover and British bulldog and red light green light and frozen tag, kick the can, etc. It was so much fun. We all played together and got along very well. What wonderful days those were! I haven't seen children playing like that all together in a very long time!

You are so right they were such innocent days and we didnt seem to be in any danger ..love Jan xx
Oh how I loved the roller rink! We didn't have "live" music but we had great music...oh yea! Gotta love the 70's and 80's! I remember the big deal for us was pretty skate covers and little furry balls that hung on the toe of the skate. We got dropped off there on Saturday's as well...oh the good old days.
I would love to hear all of your stories. I miss listening to my Mom, Aunt, & Grandma talk about the golden olden days. I could listen for hours & never get bored. It must have been wonderful living back in a time when you didn't have to be so afraid to walk out your front door. Thanks for sharing them with us.
