......until one of my favorite events begins. The Puyallup Fair starts this Friday and runs thru 10pm Sunday September 21st. I don't know which day we're going...since I've retired we just go when we feel like it and depending on the weather in the morning. I know that this year there will only be one trip out there...what with my sore knee and trying to save $$ for the upcoming vacation...one trip will be enough.
I have not missed a Fair since I was a little kid. Even pregnancy and a new baby didn't keep me away. When I was in high school, we'd report to our home rooms, attendance would be taken, they'd hand out our free tickets and then we'd be loaded on our regular school bus and taken to the Fair. At a certain time, we'd go back to where the busses were parked, climb on and they'd take us home, along the regular route.

Puyallup, is a lovely little town very near to me, about a 15 minute drive~it's a farming community known for the growing of tulips & daffodils, among many other crops. Puyallup was named after the Puyallup Tribe and means "the generous people." It's pronounced; Pew-all-up

Yes tis the season for the fairs and harvest's bounties! We too have been going to the same fair for many years and my in-laws used to work the fairs with two stands of their own, "sunday ice-cream on a stick" and "hot dogs wrapped in bacon". Ahh the good ole days,lol, they've since passed years ago but we still go to one of them that bring back many memories in Deerfield fair in N.H.

Neat picture ! You are correct in identifying Puyallup tribe in that area, but the actuality of it is even deeper.
It seems that there is a tribe of indians from Miami known as the Hellarwies, (pronounced hell-are-wies) and not to be confused with the more infamous, once lost tribe, aptly named the Fucarwies.
The Hellarwies are a splinter group from the Fucarwies who formed their tribe when the group became lost and one indian said to the other, "Where the hell are we?" Thusly, the tribal name came into existence.
The Hellarwies went to visit the Puyallup tribe (who had not yet decided on their tribal name) and entered the village only to find it deserted. A short search quickly found that the entire tribe had been swallowed up by a large sinkhole.
The Hellarwie chief, Two Dogs Humping, looked into the sinkhole and said, "We're going to pull y'all up," and that's how the tribe got its name.The pronunciation was later changed to Pew-all-up due to the embarrassing circumstance from whence the name cometh.

Oh have loads of fun dear. I love fairs, especially state fairs...I know it can take a toll on your legs with all the walking so try to pace yourself. I used to love to just walk but I have to watch too because of my lower back. Be well, love, Sandi

Love the picture from the fair from days gone by. :) I love fairs, so much. I understand about a bum knee. My bones tend to wear out faster than they used to so we try to get a jump on the day before I wear down. The kids from schools all around come to the one here during the week, but they come early and are gone by lunchtime so it is not too bad. Kelly
