Weekend Assignment #78

from John (the journal guy)http://journals.aol.com/johnmscalzi/bytheway/

Weekend Assignment #78: You are preparing to evacuate your house due to an upcoming threat. You have already packed up all your essential items, people and pets. You have room for three non-essential items. What are they?

Remember, you already have your essentials: food, medicines, water, clothes, and all the people (including the furry ones) who live with you. "Non-essentials" are things you don't need but would like to have, and can include momentos, books, jewelry, objects of sentimental value, and so on and so forth.

Extra Credit: Have you ever been evacuated?

1. My dad's Bible and my Bible

2. Picture albums that belonged to my folks and those of my kids and grandkids. And of course my picture of John Wayne & myself

3. My wedding ring (from former marriage, I love that ring) as well as my mom's engagement ring.

Extra Credit:  No I have never been evacuated unless you count the last time we had an earthquake of size.  It was February 29th the last time we had a February 29th.  I evacuated myself, right out the front door of the office, after grabbing my purse.

We were evacuated to the country - but only for a week, when Norwich was being heavily bombed during the Second World war. Ally

I had a self-evacuation policy when I was teaching in the ghetto high school.

- Out the window

- Into the car ( I always parked under my window)

- Gone in 15 seconds.

- Call the school and quit.

I was upfront with the kids: "Some teachers will protect you if there's shooting in this school. I plan to flee home in terror. If any of you can get into the passenger doors before I peel out, you're welcome along for the ride. If not, best of luck to you, and keep your head down."
