Today's Paper

There's a daily section in our local paper called "Looking Back."  Featured are local news stories from 100, 50, and 25 years ago on each days date.  Usually accompanied by a picture from the past. Being born, raised and still living in this town, that's one part of the paper (after the Obits) I read first thing every morning.  Well, imagine my surprise this morning when I opened the paper and went to the "Looking Back" section.  There was a picture of an accordion band at a recital on June 12, 1953.  I have a copy of this picture in an old scrap book, because I was in that group. I remember this evening well.  I was so shy...so intimidated by having to play a solo piece.  I did well with the group and in my own home but not out there on the stage by myself.  So where am I?  I'm in the middle row, second from the right, with black shoes & no socks~ my mother was furious because I took my socks off  backstage, I wanted to be cool. The gal sitting to my left went to the same high school that I did and we used to joke about our days in this accordion band.

I don't have that beautiful red accordion anymore, sold it for $25 back in the mid 1960's when as a single mom...when I once needed the money worse than the accordion.   But years later, my former husband & I were at the local Swap Meet and there was a little lady there with a small sized 120 bass accordion for sale and he bought it for me.  I still have that accordion and frequently get it out and play it.  In fact on our recent road trip, I bought a large stack of accordion music at a Thrift Store in Carson City, NV.

Today I am actually going to leave the house and do some shopping.  I've been home bound for several days (after spending $40 filling up my car) just puttering around here, listing stuff on eBay and going thru boxes of stuff.  I feel since I'm not working and on a fixed income I have to make a tank of gas last a month.  No extra running around allowed.

Until next time.....Linda

What fun to see yourself in the paper....and what a surprise, too! I wonder how many others saw it that were in the picture with you?
I know what you mean about gas...it took me $70 to fill up the other day. UGH!
Take care, Pam

Now, that's an accordian player - hip and fighting the establishment - no socks? Such a scandal.

I have an old picture in my scrap book of me when i was a teenager and I had my pitcture taken for the paper.  My mom and I were sitting on an ice flo that landed in the park after a bad storm. It is really neat to see things like that. That is a good idea for a newspaper. I understand about the gas. I am pretty much grounded at home. It is insane how th ese gas prices are especially when you dont have alot of money....love, Christine

Hi Linda,  How nice that you found that old photo of your band, it must have brought back so many good memories.  We are having a lot of problems over here with the cost of petrol/gas. There are industrial disputes about to start and I for one am being very careful of how much driving I`m doing.

Love Sandra xxxx

how cute! what a nice feature for that paper too! you looked adorable playing the accordion; so many accordion players too! I even wonder if they have an accordion band any more at the schools

know what you mean about the cost of gas and making sure a tank lasts for a bit; I try to limit my errand running as much as I can; compact a lot of things in one trip out

Very nice memory Linda.  Our little paper does something similar here and, like you, that is one of the first things I read.  Have a great day.

What a lovely surprise when you opened the paper Linda! I had a similar surprise when I looked on Friends Reunited and found a pic of me in the playground with my knickers tucked into my pinafore! Lol! I love the sound of the accordion, if I ever get over to see you I want to hear you play please! Jeannette xx  http://journals.aol.co.uk/jlocorriere05/Welcometomytravels/

I live in a small town with a weekly newspaper (it's published only once a week).  In a town the size of ours there isn't enough news to fill a paper seven days a week!!  LOL  They too have a section called 'Looking Back', that has 10, 20. 50, 60, 75, and 100 years back.  I always read that to see if any of my family was mentioned since we have lived here since before the civil war.

I understand about the gas, and it looks like we won't get any relief in those prices the rest of the year.  Sigh!!!

what a wonderful supprise. Years ago my dad did some trading and brought home an according. My sis and I had fun playing with it, we didn't have a clue how to make music with it. We did enjoy making spooky haunted house sounds though. LOL

How wonderful for you that must have been to see yourself in the paper like that.  I must have brought back some great memories.  You are full of surprises aren't you!  Would love to hear you and the accordian one day.  Our petrol here keeps going up by at least a pence a litre every day.  It is really frightening.  Where we live we just cannot be without a car.  We are out in the middle of nowhere and there is only one bus a day . . . even our church is about 15 miles away.  Yesterday when we checked the price at the pumps it was 117.9 a litre, which is about $9.43 a gallon...outrageous, especially when you consider that more than 60% of the cost goes to the Government in taxes!  (and the government is wondering why petrol sales are down.

Now thats a nice surprise to see in the news, not like the one I got the other day. I used to love accordian music done well, it's very happy music.  I know what you mean about gas prices, boy the whole country is doing a slow down instead of jumping in and out for something. Might make people want horses again? lol...love, Sandi
