Question on Tipping

For sometime I've wondered about something.  When you go to a hair dresser that owns the salon or has the business in her home should you tip this person ?  They are working for themselves, not someone else.... It seems to me that they are charging what they need to charge to keep their business afloat.  Anyway, tell me what you think.

I saw a nearby Valero station advertising unleaded regular gas for $3.959 today.  Wow~under $4 a gallon.  I'll head over there tomorrow and top of the gas tank.

Since the car port sale was moved to next weekend....I spent most of today re-listing items on eBay. Those auctions will close next Thursday and what's left will be priced and put out for sale on Friday & Saturday.

It was a pleasant day here today but now a little after 6pm there's a light rain falling.  The rain we had a couple days ago really did no good, so I had the sprinkler running on the front yard for several hours today.  I guess that may have triggered the showers.  LOL

The local community of Bonney Lake mourns the loss of their fire chief. Chief Dan Packer age 49, was killed last Saturday in the Panther Creek fire in Northern California.  He'd gone there to help those firefighters battle the blaze.  Chief Packer leaves behind a wife, 4 daughters and 2 grand children.  Public services will be held next week.

Well, since I've been sitting here for hours today...I think I'll get up and go vacuum the house. It needs to be done and that will give me a little exercise for today.   Have a good evening.....until next time  Linda

Mom always told me if the hairdresser is the owner no tip.  I do tip my hairdresser 5 bucks each time I go.  I wonder what the average tip is.

I was so thrilled to get gas the other day at Safeway for 3.71! (I had .30 off the price). I was jumping for joy having it under $4.00.  My boys in VA have never reached the high prices we did here in WA.

Very sad that WA has lost another fire fighter in CA.

Hi..I've always felt that anyone performing a personal service deserved to be tipped. If a business is doing very well, the boss normally will not be part of the work crew.  I've had brides tell me I paid for this service why should I also tip any of you on top of it? Personal service folks tend to be low paid and do appreciate a good tipper...so when I go out or to the hairdresser I do tip well. I'm sorry to hear about the firefighters death, we have lost so many heros in recent years, God bless his family.....love, Sandi

I have had the same hairdresser for 25 years.  When she worked for someone else, I tipped her.  After she opened her own salon and got established, I stopped tipping her.  That's just the way I feel about it.

The actuality of it all depends on each location. If a newbie just opened his or her business, the prices are usually low to bring in new business and the price is predicated on the hope for a tip. If, not they break even.

In an established salon, a tip is neither applauded nor frowned upon. Let you conscience be your guide.

sad about the firefighter; so young with a young family

gas here is still over $4.00 a gallon; I heard on the news this morning that DC and 12 states still had gas over $4.00 so of course California had to be in that group; I did see it for $4.09 today so that was much better :)

I voted; I never had this happen to me; I wouldn't have even thought about not tipping the hairdresser if she owned her own shop so I said "yes" to tip, but then I read Robin's comment and it sounds like her mom gave her great advice

and to answer Robin's question, if I'm getting a cut, coloring and highlight, I usually tip $10; haircut $3

Our petrol has gone down a few cents a litre of late, not enough though!!  Sorry to read about the fire chief.  Very sad.  You should see my corn plants!  They are tufting now and I can see little ears of corn starting on them!  I'm so excited!

A never go to the hairdresser but regarding tips ~ if a person gives a good service it's nice to show appreciation by giving a gratuity. I'm so sorry the firefighter died, condolences to his family. Jeannette xx

Morning dear Friend,

Well on your poll,  as a owner of my cafe people would tip sometimes and sometimes not.   Tipping is such a controversial issue.   No wonder Americans think we Canucks are cheapo as I never realised that ALL states are NOT covered by a minimum wage.(maybe now they are) but years ago I asked a waitress what she made and it was just above $2.oo and then I said well that is NOT even minimum wage and she said our state does not have one for this type of job therefore we DEPEND on our tips.
Although your question does not apply to this scenario...often in a restaurant a server has to PAY out despite the fact they do not get a tip...ie.   server has 10 people and no one tips and the bill is $100.00 she still has to pay.  I remember our eldest working at a place in Banff where she sometimes ended up being in the hole....
So I also question the system...also as Chefs I know people will NOT tip if the food is less that satisfactory and THAT is NOT the servers fault..
So to answer your question I have been recently going to a gal who does her work at her home and I did tip because I was VERY pleased....
People are at odds on this whole issue...but I know after our girls did some waitress work our attitude changed.

Blessings on this day..

Just stopping by to say hi & reconnect with journals since getting a computer again!!!
As for the tipping, I guess for me, I go on a case by case business. I happen to know that my hairdresser (who is also the owner) is struggling financially as are a lot of small business owners these days, so when I can, I try to give her extra, same with my dog groomer who is also the owner. It's really quite something to think about now that you put it out there.....I'm not really sure how I actually feel, only that I usually do tip them. Gas was $3.76 here today......who ever thought I'd be so excited to see gas at that price, but I feel like it's a steal! :)

Thanks for your support since my fire....it means a lot, especially since you didn't really know me that well. You're very special.

Pooh Hugs,
Linda

I always tip at least 5 or 10.00 depending on what I have done.
But I consider her a freind of the family and she earns every cent.
I think you are not susposed to tip owner of salon, but I think if they need money and are good tip anyway.

If the hairdresser does a good job, I always tip. It should not matter if he/she is the owner. JMO.
Hope you are having a good weekend.
